History
1890
Bio Farma was founded on August 6, 1890 in Jakarta. This is the milestone of the
establishment of vaccine and sera producer in Indonesia. Small pox was the first vaccine produced by
Bio Farma in this period.
1906 - 1917
Bio Farma produced Anti Rabies Vaccine, Cholera Vaccine, Typhoid Vaccine, Polyvalent
bacterial vaccine, Tetanus and Diphtheria Toxoid, Anti Tetanus Serum, Snake
Venom Anti Serum.
1923
Bio Farma moved its production facility from Jakarta to Bandung, West Java.
1926 – 1952
Bio Farma has successfully produced room dried smallpox vaccine, Dysentery formalin vaccine, Pertussis
vaccine, Formalin killed rabies vaccine, A new monkey brain phenol merthiolate
rabies vaccine.
1957 - 1969
- Virus and tissue culture laboratory was established.
- Production of BCG vaccine was started using a primary seed lot from Pasteur Instituut Paris no. 1173-P2.
- Freeze dried small pox vaccine was introduced.
- Virus laboratory was used by WHO for diagnostic smallpox course for South East Asian Countries.
1970 - 1971
- The Bilthoven unity system was implemented for manufacturing of vaccines.
- Quality Control Department and Mycology Laboratory were established.
1974 - 1978
- Indonesia was declared free of small pox
- The usage of cell line for viral diagnostic purposes
- Producing various antigen and anti sera for diagnostic purposes
- Freeze dried suckling mice brain rabies vaccine was produced
1978 - 1996
Polio and Measles Vaccine production facility was established in 1992, and Prof.Dr.Konosuke Fukai initiated
the transfer of technology for Polio and Measles vaccine production to Bio Farma, through Japan Poliomyelitis
Research Institute and BIKEN Kanonji Institute-Japan.
2000
Bio Farma has started exporting vaccine.
WHO has appointed Bio Farma as one of the Global Training Network sites, to conduct a training course on
the Quality Assurance of Live Attenuated of Polio and Measles Vaccines for NRA staff in developing countries.
Bio Farma is as a member of SRVP-IDB (Self Reliance on Vaccine Production) in Islamic Countries, organized by
Islamic Development Bank.
2001
Bio Farma is as a founder of Developing Country Vaccine Manufacturers Network (DCVMN).
2004
Bio Farma produces Combo vaccine (DTP-Hepatitis B vaccine).
2005
The inaguration of a new building for Research and Development (Research and Development Center).
