TUBERCULOSIS

Tuberculosis is an ancient and venerable infectious disease throughout the world. There are records indicating that pulmonary tuberculosis was recognized in Europe in pre-Christian times, and Hippocrates clearly described the disease in ancient Greece (1)

Mode of transmission
Human tuberculosis is mainly caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, an acid-fast rod that is spread by droplet infection from individuals suffering from open pulmonary tuberculosis to those surrounding them (1).

Vaccination
Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) is the current vaccine for tuberculosis. It was first used in 1921. BCG is the only vaccine available today for protection against tuberculosis. It is most effective in protecting children from the disease (2).
